What is economic abuse.
What is physical abuse.
Graphic from Hourglass explaining coercive control as a pattern of behavior used to dominate, isolate, and intimidate an older person, often in close relationships. It involves tactics like manipulation, threats, surveillance, and restricting freedom. Signs include limiting movement, isolating from loved ones, controlling access to resources, gaslighting, and using threats or humiliation.

Hourglass praises Essex Police partnership in highlighting abuse of older people.

When Carol and Stephen Baxter were found dead in their Essex home by their daughter Ellena, the deaths were initially deemed a tragic  accident. Weeks later, toxicology results revealed a chilling truth - both had been poisoned with the powerful opioid Fentanyl.

Essex Millionaire Murders tells the tragic story around Carol and Stephen Baxter’s deaths on 9 April 2023, at their home in West Mersea. The investigation remains one of the most complex ever undertaken by the force.

The documentary explores D’Wit’s grooming and control of the Baxter family in the years leading up to their deaths. As part of this manipulation, he created many fake personas. This included posing as a doctor and persuading Carol and Stephen to take on a “liver cleanse” – a cruel, calculated act that ended their lives.

To address the issues highlighted in the documentary,  Hourglass and Essex Police have partnered to raise awareness about the abuse of older people.
